Sujit Choudhry Leading the Way in Constitutional Law and Reform the World Over

In July 2017, constitutional affairs expert and director for the Center for Constitutional Transitions Mr Sujit Choudhry attended a constitution and democracy workshop in Kiev, Ukraine. The workshop brought together a lengthy list of constitution and democratic affairs experts and was meant to discuss the semi-presidential governance system in Ukraine as well as the challenges that the system has faced so far. Also responsible for making the workshop a success was a group of intergovernmental organizations which have been on the forefront of fostering democratic constitutional governance all around the world.

In his address, Mr Sujit Choudhry posited that the Ukrainian democracy and constitutionalism is not very stable in its current form. The main indicators of this fact, he said, were the legislature electoral system, the concentration of the powers of the presidency and the weak political parties within the country. He, however, expressed optimism that the country would embrace a more democratic approach to governance through the establishment of an all-inclusive constitution-making process. Mr Sujit Choudhry held it that current constitutional thought leaders had a responsibility to consult widely in order to collect and discuss policy options which would aid in the constitutional reform process. He exuded confidence that once this was achieved, Ukraine’s democracy would only grow stronger and more stable in the coming years.   More to read on
